In 2000-2001 NIST used an implementation of the FBI KFF provided by a contractor
Ran on a dual 800MHz server with 2GB RAM and 100GB RAID 5, one floppy drive, one CD drive
Environment was Windows NT Server 4, MS SQL Server 7, MS IIS 3
User logged into server console to perform work
User was presented with a series of text screens to collect information on the software product
Hard to follow the text screen progression, hard to correct typos
User inserted software media and did something else for an hour
This implementation opened .CAB and .ZIP files and hashed contents
Worked live on the database tables
Nearly impossible to get contractor to expand the capability (.tar, .uu, .sit)
